Gonzalez Moves On to the Top Five Outfielder List of 2010
Only two out of the top five outfielders from June 23 have returned this time around. The three newcomers to the list are all having their best seasons in their career. Will they remain on the top five list by the end of the season? Only time will tell.
4. Carlos Gonzalez, Colorado Rockies: Gonzalez came out of nowhere this season. In his third year in the majors, Gonzalez is proving that he may be an elite player for many years to come. Gonzalez is currently hitting .320 with 21 home runs and 69 RBI’s. Gonzalez is a sure surprise this season after only hitting .284 with 13 home runs and 29 RBI’s last season. Is this guy for real? The Rockies sure hope so. Gonzalez is helping the Rockies stay in contention in the NL West. The Rockies are currently seven and a half games out of first behind the Padres. The Rockies still have a chance thanks to Gonzalez. Gonzalez’s remarkable year will have to continue if the Rockies want to make the playoffs.

Tulowitzki Falls to Number Three of the Best Shortstops of 2010
Four out of the top five shortstops have remained on the list since early June. Out of the four players that have remained, three of them have moved in the standings. There is a new number one, read on to see who it is!
3. Troy Tulowitzki, Colorado Rockies: Tulowitzki fell down from number one to number three this time around. Back on June 21, Tulowitzki was hitting .306 with nine home runs and 34 RBI’s. Now on August 2, Tulowitzki’s average only dropped one point to .305, he still has nine home runs and only improved his RBI total by seven to 41. The reason for these numbers is that he was on the disabled list for 33 games with a fractured left wrist after being hit by a pitch. If it wasn’t for the injury, Tulowitzki may still be at the number one spot. The Rockies are looking to Tulowitzki to help them make the playoffs now that he is playing again. The Rockies are currently in third place in their division, seven games behind the Padres. The NL West is going to be interesting the next two months with four teams that all have a chance at making the playoffs.

Olivo Moves Up to #1 of the Best Catchers of 2010
Only two catchers’ from the June top five list have remained into July. One of them moved up to number one and the other is almost off the list falling to number five. The three new entries come as a little bit of a surprise since one of them is just filling in for an injured starter. I’m sure by next month this list will change once again.
1. Miguel Olivo, Colorado Rockies: No, number one is no longer Victor Martinez. Martinez fell al the way off the list from the number one spot back in June. Olivo was number two last time and he pretty much maintained his pace since June to land him at number one. Who would have thought Olivo would be the best catcher in the league at the end of July? Olivo is having the best season of his career and is helping the Rockies keep pace in the all of a sudden tough NL West. Olivo has 12 home runs, 43 RBI’s and a .313 average. No other catcher is hitting that well in all three of those categories. John Buck comes the closest, but Olivo’s average is well ahead of any other catcher in the league. Can Olivo keep going at this above normal pace for himself? Buck and Napoli will be fighting for his number one spot by the end of the season. Soto has a chance to make it to number one also, but is further off than the other two. Mauer, may be in the case of too little too late. Mauer has a lot of catching up to do in the home run department to be considered as the best offensive catcher this season.

Ubaldo Jimenez Makes #1 of the Best Starting Pitchers of 2010
This year is the first year in a long time that starting pitchers are dominating more than hitters. ERA’s are so low this year for many pitchers, which made it very hard to pick a top five. A lot of people probably know who number one is going to be, but the other four can be anyone’s guess.
1. Ubaldo Jimenez, Colorado Rockies: By now everyone knows who Jimenez is, but before this season he was just another average pitcher. Jimenez started his first full season in 2008 and was just 12-12 with an ERA of 3.99, nothing spectacular except for his strikeout number which was 172. Last year Jimenez again was right around the .500 mark with a record of 15-12 and a 3.47 ERA, so he improved a little, his strikeouts were still up there, with 198. This year all of a sudden Jimenez is out of control! Jiminez almost has more wins then his career high of 15 last season. Jimenez is 14-1 with a 1.83 ERA and 102 strikeouts. If Jimenez doesn’t play the rest of the season, he probably would still win the Cy Young Award. Jimenez is on pace for 30 wins and 220 strikeouts. If Jimenez can keep this pace up all season, it will go down as one of the best pitching performances of all time. There hasn’t been a pitcher who has had 30 or more wins in a season since Denny McClain did it in 1968 when he went 31-6. Jimenez will win the Cy Young Award this year, if he doesn’t he will have to have one of the biggest collapses of all time.

Did Vinny Castilla Take Steroids in 2004?
I took a look back at the year 2004 and discovered many players who were only average players really stepped up their offense that year. Then there are other players who were already good and had a spectacular year in 2004. The players that I came up with that stood out the most in 2004 are a little fishy to me. Is their production up that year by natural talent or was it a product of the steroid era?
Vinny Castilla: Castilla was nearing the end of his career in 2004. Castilla was an everyday player from 1993-2005. Castilla established himself as a power hitter early in his career averaging around 40 home runs and 115 RBI’s from 1995-1999. Naturally from 2000 on Castilla’s numbers started to decline to 20 home runs and 80 RBI’s. 2004 was a different story when he found his younger self and hit 35 home runs and 131 RBI’s. Coincidence? Maybe, but 2005 was his last full season and he only hit 12 home runs and 66 RBI’s.

Then there are other players who were already good and had a spectacular year in 2004. The players that I came up with that stood out the most in 2004 are a little fishy to me. Is their production up that year by natural talent or was it a product of the steroid era?
Melvin Mora: Mora was in his fifth full season and only averaged about 15 home runs a season and 50 RBI’s. In 2004 Mora hit 27 home runs and 104 RBI’s. In 2005 Mora had similar numbers, but from 2006 on he only averaged about 17 home runs and 65 RBI’s. 2004 is still Mora’s best season.

Miguel Olivo Makes #2 of the Best Catchers of 2010
There aren’t many big name catchers in the majors anymore, there are only a handful that come to mind as top tier catchers in the league.
2. Miguel Olivo, Colorado Rockies: The Rockies have really caught lightning in a bottle with Olivo. Olivo has moved from team to team over his career never finishing the season with an average over .263. Out of nowhere Olivo is hitting .309 so far this year with eight home runs and 25 RBI’s. All of these numbers are on pace to make Olivo have his best year of his career. Olivo is also leading his team in on base percentage, slugging, and average. The Rockies are currently two games above .500 and only four games out of first place. Olivo has been a big part of their success, but i don’t know how much longer he will keep this up.

Ubaldo holds all aces
Maybe a couple of years ago, Ubaldo Jimenez’s emotions would have gotten the best of him. But not now. Not after his evolution into the most dominant pitcher in baseball.
“I went to bed at 10 last night and slept great,” Jimenez said. “I was anticipating this game, but I was like, ‘Don’t get too high. Just go out there and try to execute your pitches. Throw your fastball for strikes.’ And that’s what I did.”
It sounds so simple, and for Jimenez, it is. His start Monday versus the San Francisco Giants may have been more hyped than his previous 10, but his MO, his demeanor and the results were largely the same as the others.

Rockies up and at ‘em for opening-day win
The standings will say the Rockies won their opening-day game Monday against the Milwaukee Brewers. The expressions on their faces afterward said they survived it.
“I wouldn’t say it was completely conventional, the way we did it,” Rockies manager Jim Tracy said. “We made some things difficult for ourselves, but if you have plans on being a pretty good ballclub, there are days when you’re going to have to play through some adversity.”
Ian Stewart, celebrating his 25th birthday, provided most of the offense with a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly in the Rockies’ 5-3 victory. But it was the bullpen’s ability to weave in and out of danger in relief of Ubaldo Jimenez — the potential tying run came up with no outs in the ninth — that saved the day.

Rockies replace slumping Hawpe with Spilborghs
Colorado Rockies manager Jim Tracy juggled his lineup Sunday with Phillies left-hander J.A. Happ on the mound instead of Pedro Martinez.
Tracy benched All-Star right fielder Brad Hawpe, who has slumped over the second half of the season, and replaced him with Ryan Spilborghs for Game 3, which was bumped back a night because of a snowstorm.
Tracy also moved catcher Yorvit Torrealba up two spots to fifth in the order, hoping to put his hottest bat behind Todd Helton and Troy Tulowitzki, who have yet to get into an offensive groove in this best-of-five series.
Torrealba, a career .255 hitter, said he had never batted fifth in the order.
