Rockies starting pitcher Marquis finds some of his old stuff
Perhaps forgotten in the madness of the Rockies’ latest chapter of LoDo magic was the performance of starter Jason Marquis.
Going into Tuesday night’s game against the Brewers, he was lost. But he just might have found himself with six resourceful innings of pitching.
“I would be lying if I said I didn’t have any doubts,” Marquis said about his state of mind entering Tuesday’s game. “Any human being who goes through struggles will have doubts. Hopefully you don’t bring them out to the mound.”
But Marquis appeared to have been doing just that of late. In each of his three previous starts, he went out hunting for his career-high 16th victory. But each time he got blown out, going 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA.

Tulowitzki named NL Player of the Week
Troy Tulowitzki is on pace to have one of the best seasons ever by a shortstop.
That brilliant campaign notched another highlight last week, and it led to yet another one on Monday, when — thanks in large part to a home run streak that put him in rarefied air — the Rockies’ infielder was named National League Player of the Week, presented by Bank of America.
Tulowitzki homered in four consecutive games from Tuesday-Saturday, becoming the first shortstop to accomplish that feat since Miguel Tejada did it in 2005. Also, the 24-year-old hit .391 (9-for-23) last week, and his four homers and eight runs scored tied for the Major League lead.

Rockies hope rest revives Hawpe’s bat
Tuesday was Rockies right fielder Brad Hawpe’s night to reflect and recharge.
He did not play in the Rockies’ 10-2 loss to the Giants. The presence of Barry Zito on the mound and Hawpe’s own hitting slump — he is hitting .242 since appearing in the All-Star Game and has managed one RBI in September — made giving Hawpe the night off a feasible move for manager Jim Tracy.
As he relaxed in a hallway near the Rockies’ dugout before Tuesday’s game, Hawpe said he would think positive thoughts. The Rockies need for Hawpe to have his mind and his swing in the right place. He’ll likely return to the lineup Wednesday as the Rockies try to avoid being swept for the second time in three weeks by the Giants, their closest competition in the National League Wild Card race. The Rockies lead the Giants by 2 1/2 games.

Cook, Contreras on road to recovery
Injured starters Jose Contreras and Aaron Cook threw bullpen sessions on Sunday prior to the series finale with the Padres, and both pitchers appear ready to face live hitters in the very near future.
Cook, out with a right shoulder injury since Aug. 22, threw off the mound on Friday as well, and the next step in his recovery process will be to test the shoulder in a simulated game on Tuesday.
Manager Jim Tracy only caught a glimpse of Cook’s throwing session from afar, but liked what he saw nonetheless. Moreso, Tracy interpreted the presence of both Cook and Contreras as an indication that both are progressing well.

Rockies happy to have ace back in action
Rockies right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez smiled as he left AT&T Park on Monday night. His teammates were processing a 9-1 loss to Tim Lincecum and the Giants. Jimenez didn’t participate, so he could begin looking to Tuesday night.
“I can’t wait,” Jimenez said.
The Giants enter Tuesday night’s second game of a three-game showdown trailing the National League Wild Card-leading Rockies by 3 1/2 games. As Jimenez has turned hot this season, the Rockies have had no qualms about saying he’s an ace-type pitcher.

Rockies content with new additions
Rockies manager Jim Tracy didn’t spend recent days following the moves of the competition in the National League West, even though it would have made for intriguing reading.
The first-place Dodgers picked up slugger Jim Thome and starting pitcher Jon Garland just before Monday’s deadline for acquiring players so they can be eligible for postseason rosters. They also nabbed veteran infielder Ronnie Belliard previously.
The Giants signed Brad Penny, who has a history of beating the Rockies during his days with the Dodgers. Interestingly, however, the Rockies did not attempt to sign Penny even though Tracy managed him with the Dodgers a few years back.

Rockies down Mets, take Wild Card lead
Jorge De La Rosa had been baseball’s winningest pitcher for three months, but the first inning Tuesday night looked like a losing proposition.
He gave up three hits and a walk. At least four balls were smoked. He gave up two runs, and it would have been worse if not for a strange baserunning error by the Mets’ Angel Pagan.
Then the real De La Rosa arrived, halted the Rockies’ season-worst losing streak at five games and put the team back atop the National League Wild Card race with an 8-3 victory at Coors Field before 26,190.

Giambi hopes to help Rockies in a pinch
Jason Giambi has 15 seasons, seven years in the postseason, a trip to the World Series and an American League Most Valuable Player Award behind him.
But he’s joining the Rockies in hopes of a few big moments.
“I’m excited — hopefully, I can bring that lightning in the bottle,” Giambi said Tuesday, the day he joined the Rockies for the start of a three-game set against the Mets at Coors Field.
